Hot flushes and menopause: what really helps

Hot flushes, night sweats, brain fog — what helps and what to ask your doctor.

What research and doctors say

Strong evidence

Talk to your doctor about HRT

Hormone replacement therapy is the most effective treatment for hot flushes and night sweats, and for many women the benefits outweigh the risks. Non-hormonal options exist too.

Practical tip

Layers, a fan and cool drinks

Dress in layers you can take off, keep a small fan nearby and sip cold water when a flush starts.

Some evidence

CBT

Cognitive behavioural therapy has good evidence for helping with hot flushes, low mood and sleep in menopause.

Practical tip

Notice your triggers

Spicy food, alcohol, caffeine and stress trigger flushes for many women. Logging them in the health diary helps you spot yours.
